GREENLAND (KXAN) - Mother Nature in western Greenland is offering up some stunning video.
The YouTube video, put up by exposurelabs, is getting pretty popular after catching the largest glacier calving ever filmed. Calving is the splitting and shedding of the glacier into a smaller ice piece.
The historic breakup happened for 75 minutes at the Illulissat Glacier, retreating for a full mile across a calving face 3 miles wide – according to the video’s post.
In addition, the height of the ice is about 300- to 400 feet above water, with a full height of 3,000 feet.
Illustrations at the end of video gives you a sense of the scale and significance of the event.
It's as if the entire lower tip of Manhattan broke off, except that the thickness -- the height of the glacier calving -- is equivalent to buildings 2 1/2- to three times taller. So it's as if the entire city is just breaking apart, buildings engulfed into oblivion.
It took 100 years -- from 1900 to 2000 -- for the glacier to retreat 8 miles. From 2000 to 2010, it retreated 9 miles, which means it retreated more in the last 10 years than it had in the previous 100 years before that.
