Since its win, In the Heights is being called the new face of musical theatre. It's not hard to see why. Employing elements of hip-hop, rap, traditional Latino music and that good old Gershwin-style music, In the Heights is a hodgepodge.
Creator Lin-Manuel Miranda wanted to reflect his experiences in the not-as-well-known Washington Heights, Manhattan with a musical that focused on the disparate influences that create such a neighborhood. Consequently, In the Heights is a story of modern day New York as much as it is a story of the people that make up that complex city.
Shaun Taylor-Corbett has been a member of the cast since In the Height's days on off-Broadway, before it made the transition to the stage that would garner the 2008 Best New Musical Tony Award - the pinnacle of musical theatre. He speaks about his role, watching the play grow to its current national star status and future plans:
