AUSTIN, Tx (KNVA) - Each year, The CW Austin begins the quest to find the face of our local television station.
This "Face" is known as The CW Austin Star and works with the station for one year to gain unparalleled experience both in front of and behind the camera: event marketing, e-marketing, internet, radio, cable and much more. The CW Austin Star reaches out to our station's young audience and hits the hot spots to help promote our station and The CW brand.
Find out below about the audition, voting, and judging processes that lead us each year to find the best talent in Texas.
The information below is based on last year's CW Austin Star contest. Details, timelines, locations, etc., are subject to change.
Contestants are asked to complete an application and audition in front of a camera at a pre-determined audition location. Each contestant also records a one-minute "Plea for Votes" video to convince Austin that he/she should be the next CW Austin Star. If a contestant makes it to the Semi-Finalist round, his/her "Plea for Votes" video is streamed on our site to earn votes. Any interested contestant must be at least 21 years old and a current resident/student in the Austin area. No mailed-in, emailed or uploaded auditions are accepted.
The CW Austin picks the Top Five at the live auditions. Those finalists are listed at thecwaustin.com. The decision, however, is YOURS, AUSTIN! The Top Five post a new video each week for 4 weeks and the viewers vote. In order to vote for any of the five semi-finalists, votes are collected in the format of a poll. There is no limit on how many times a voter can watch a video or vote. (HINT: Semi-finalists who used their face-to face and online marketing skills and not just word-of-mouth have the most success with getting online votes).
The judges' panel during the live audition is looking for key qualities that would make a great CW Austin Star. Each contestant is asked to read scripts, do impromptu promos, and answer questions from the panel.
Qualities that are factored into the judges' decision include: confidence, personality, appearance, on-camera presence, likability factor, relevance to young demographics, enthusiasm and overall ability to communicate and follow direction.
The final selection process for the winner is determined by a combination of judging panel votes, online votes, background checks and station management input. In 2010, you should expect to see the TOP FIVE finalists asked to complete tasks including but not limited to blogging, event hosting and using Facebook / Twitter.
The CW Star job is the opportunity of a lifetime...and we're not kidding! The CW Austin Star receives a one-year contract to be a paid, part-time employee of The CW Austin and gain invaluable experience through appearances on TV, radio, web and cable. Plus, the Star will be an integral part of a marketing team that is constantly looking for ways to establish The CW Austin in the community, reach out to young audiences and engage with them. This also includes behind-the-scenes experience in event management, managing web content, production shoots and much, much, more.
The CW Austin Star needs to like the nightlife...because we want him/her in the community, on college campuses and at all kinds of Austin events, mingling with fans of CW shows and important members of our community. The star will be recognized and have a following of fans, so being comfortable as the center of attention is a must.
The CW Austin Star has to love the camera...because when he/she is not shooting promos, there are video blogs, interviews, man-on-the-street interactions and much more to get up on the website. Plus, he/she will front the station's Twitter, Facebook and MySpace accounts, chatting up events, promotions, contests, the CW shows and day-to-day life.
